In association with Erstwilder, Mumpty has run a feature entitled “The Pinup Platoon” throughout the month of March, featuring interviews with all ten Miss Pinup NZ 2015 finalists.

Now is the time to interview the reigning Miss Pinup NZ 2014, Miss Victory Violet!  Ella (Miss Victory Violet) is a finalist in the upcoming Miss Viva Las Vegas Pinup Competition and so she has kindly answered the same questions as the Miss Pinup girls, but they relate to the Miss Viva Las Vegas competition.

AND don’t forget, there are only a couple more days to be in to win one of two highly-sought-after and now sold out, Erstwilder Flamboyant Flamingo Fair necklaces – to find out all about it, see the details at the end of this interview with the fabulous Miss Victory Violet.

Soooo … without further ado; meet the reigning Miss Pinup NZ 2014 and finalist in the upcoming Miss Viva Las Vegas Pinup Contest at the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend ..

Miss Victory Violet …

Miss VV2Question one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  I did Spanish Flamenco dancing for four years as a teenager!

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A: The first things that come to mind are the ones that have real sentimental value.  When my Nana died, I inherited all her gloves as I was the only one with hands small enough to fit them!  I love wearing them and knowing they were hers … she was teeny tiny – I think about 5′ 1″ – so I would never have fitted anything else of hers!

Another item is my Bettie Page Captains Swing Dress which I bought at the Bettie Page store in Las Vegas the day we arrived there two years ago.  I wore it that night when Matt and I went for dinner and a show and that was the night Matt popped the big question!

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Viva Las Vegas competition coming along?
A:  Preparation is going well … I am just gathering up the last few accessories for my outfit on stage and getting some flyers designed and printed for the day.  There’s not as much preparation needed as the Miss Pinup NZ competition which is a bit of a blessing!

Question four:
If  you were to win Miss Viva Las Vegas 2015, how would you most likely celebrate your win from the options below:

a) I’d guzzle champagne through a gold-plated straw and get lightheaded and dizzy with all my friends.
b) Crank up the music and dance like crazy.
c) Enlist a flashmob and dance through the streets wearing your Miss Pinup NZ crown.
d) Take your crown on a road trip, Instagramming your antics all the way!
e) Go to a karaoke bar and sing your own praises.
f) Other (please specify!)
A:  (f) I’ll be in Vegas so who knows what the night could bring! Maybe a limo ride, definitely some celebratory champagne and of course a lot of Instagramming!

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  I love primers … I feel like they make or break my makeup application!  At the moment I’m loving the Benefit Porefessional Primer.

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Viva Las Vegas 2015 experience?
A:  Just to have fun, meet some fabulous people and get up on stage feeling confident!  I said to myself last year that if I won Miss Pinup New Zealand, I would enter Miss Viva Las Vegas.

I don’t know if there has ever been a finalist from New Zealand before but I’d love to bring the crown home to our little country!

Miss VV3Thank you so much Miss Victory Violet – I hope you’re having an amazing time on your long-awaited honeymoon – best of luck with your aspirations to bring home the Miss Viva Las Vegas 2015 crown to NZ!

Soooo … if you are reading this and you just happen to be attending the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, be sure to vote for Miss Victory Violet … votes can be cast at the car show.

Miss Moonshine’s Three Top Tips …

Miss Moonshine’s “Three Top Tips”
for winning a pinup competition …

Miss Moonshine 2015
Custom watermelon skirt by Devel Branded; custom singlet to match by Honey L’Amour.

When I asked Miss Moonshine 2015, aka Miss Monique Sweet, if she would give me her three top tips on how to win a pinup competition, she said she wasn’t sure she was qualified to do that – ‘cos that’s the kind of girl she is!  But actually, that’s just not true is it, because she recently won Miss Moonshine 2015!  As a friend of hers, I know that A LOT of time, thought and effort went into that win and it was bloody well deserved! So, herewith, Miss Moonshine’s top tips …

Top Tip # 1:
Make like a scout and “Be Prepared”

Miss Monique Sweet packing
Monique and Sam’s “Miss Moonshine Roadtrip” packing …

Now when Miss Monique Sweet says “be prepared,” she means, be prepared!  To demonstrate … see the tiny little blue bag to the left in the picture above? That’s Sam’s packing for the trip to Miss Moonshine! (Sam is Monique’s boyfriend.) Yes, that’s right … ALL.THE.REST belonged to Monique!  And that was for ONE night!

All Monique’s “moonshine ensembles” were extremely well-planned and thought-out – in fact, she actually started planning “the outfit” in question (i.e. the watermelon one!) in October for The Very Vintage Day Out in April, but decided to move it forward for the Miss Moonshine competition.  All details were planned and executed right down to the last little features that tied her looks together – many people don’t go to this much effort, but if you want to win – that’s what you gotta do! (See below.)  Monique also had a backup dress just in case, and to be double-sure, she also had an entire backup outfit in case she spilt something down herself before the competition!  Now that’s dedication for you right?!

And of course, she had lists; lists of what to pack the night before; lists of what to pack the morning of – lists, lists, lists!

Think of every outfit you’re planning to wear (and take); and how you would put it together from top-to-toe.  Make sure you have everything you need – don’t forget your bra and if you need it, your fashion tape to prevent any “slips”!  Also think about how you will be accessorising those outfits.  Then double-check your lists…” says Monique.

Extra for experts: to read about how Miss Moonshine’s STUNNING custom watermelon skirt came to be, click here for Danielle at Devel Branded’s post … I know she was really proud and excited to have made that skirt, and so she should be too – it’s a stunner!

Top Tip # 2:
It’s all in the details, my friend!  AKA: the “Top to Toe look”

When Miss Monique Sweet decided she wanted her main theme to be “watermelon” she went all out on the accessories and details – check these out:

Monique Sweet Moonshine details

Of course, there is a fine line between cute and completely OTT, so if you were thinking about a fruity theme for Miss Pinup, you’ll probably want to stop short of looking like a full fruit salad – perhaps just a pineapple?

Top Tip # 3:
Own your look, be yourself and have fun!

Monique Sweet

One of Miss Monique Sweet’s most endearing features, in my opinion, is her ability to laugh at herself and to have fun with her pinup persona.  She’s developed a “look” that is true to herself and what she loves; it’s a mix of vintage finds, treasures from her grandmother, the result of some dedicated op-shopping; sometimes new, sometimes old; sometimes borrowed (!); there’s a little bit of a 60’s influence thrown in there too … it’s eclectic, it suits her and she rocks it.  (And of course it’s always nice to have some custom-made pieces that are unique to you in your pinup wardrobe.)

Monique says “One of the most important things with your look is to mix it up and don’t take yourself too seriously.  Some days I feel like I look like a rainbow spilt its colours all over me – but those are my favourite days!

“Have a plan for your stage persona too, think about your answers and your poses and all that kinda stuff and then be prepared to throw that all  out; wing it and let your personality shine through! If you make a mistake, too bad, people love you for it!  I was so nervous at Miss Moonshine that I could hardly remember where I lived, but people just laughed and I think it worked in my favour.  Get up there, show off and own it!

Miss Moonshine outfitHere’s one last look at Monique’s winning watermelon outfit at Miss Moonshine – spectacular huh!

Thanks for your fabulous tips Miss Monique Sweet … I’m sure the ten Miss Pinup NZ 2015 finalists will find them most helpful.  And if those tips aren’t enough, I’ve given them your cellphone number so they can call you any time of the day or night for emergency advice!  You’re welcome.

Love and top tips …

Question one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  I have a real morbid curiosity when it comes to death and dark, gloomy things. I know, I know … it’s something I rarely talk about with others because you do get the odd strange look, but I am who I am!  I love watching documentaries on eerie Queen Victoria (the OG Goth), eating a whole packet of biscuits while glued to the CI channel, searching for mourning jewellery on Ebay, looking at tragic images from crime scenes, or reading about odd fetishes. I’m not sure where the fascination comes from, but the darker side definitely has some beauty to it.  Goodness, that’s an interesting way to start off a Q n’ A!  Hehe 🙂

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A:  My favourite item of clothing is probably the ‘Havana’ dress from Pinup Girl Clothing.  I’m constantly raving about it and want it in every colour (I’m a block colours kind of gal, rather than prints).

I think if this dress could talk it would constantly be sharing the story of how the moment you pop that beauty on, everything changes … your mood, your confidence, your sassiness levels … everything! That dress is pure confidence and once it’s on I am ready to take whatever life throws at me that day!

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Miss Pinup NZ competition coming along?  Would you like to offer our readers any “teasers” with regard to your particular talent or your outfits for Miss Pinup NZ?
A:  My preparations are actually coming along rather nicely.  I’m a big lists person, so everything is written down and being ticked off. What can the VVDO crowd expect on the day? Well I’m reluctant to give TOO much away, but if you can imagine a sweet hybrid of Katy Perry, Dita Von Teese, Lucille Ball, the colour black and all vintage films – then you’ll basically have Miss Charlotte Cake’s favourite things wrapped into all four stages of the comp.

Question four:
If you could pick a theme song to walk onto the Miss Pinup stage to, what would it be?
A:  It would totally be Rockin’ Robin – by Bobby Day.

Question five:
If  you were to win Miss Pinup NZ 2015, how would you most likely celebrate your win from the options below:

a) I’d guzzle champagne through a gold-plated straw and get lightheaded and dizzy with all my friends.
b) Crank up the music and dance like crazy.
c) Enlist a flashmob and dance through the streets wearing your Miss Pinup NZ crown.
d) Take your crown on a road trip, Instagramming your antics all the way!
e) Go to a karaoke bar and sing your own praises.
f) Other (please specify!)
A:  While the above all sound pretty exciting, I would most likely bake a cake and eat the entire thing in celebration!  Mmmmm cake!

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  Red lipstick – instant class and confidence booster.

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Pinup NZ 2015 experience?
A:  To show my younger self that you can overcome the most crippling anxiety if you just hold on and take each day at a time. I  would never, in a million years, have expected to be up on that stage showcasing myself, because my anxiety used to possess my entire body and stop me doing the things I love.  I would never have let myself do it for being too afraid.

Now is the time that feels right, so bring it on!

Miss Rouge …

MumptyStyle Miss Rouge2

Question one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  Well most people do know that I am candy-obsessed, but I’m not sure they know I’m also so “flip-my-lid” over the delicious taste of an ice cold Coca-cola!  There is nothing like a picnic in the summer and an ice cold Coca-cola in my hand!  I love it so much that when I’m travelling the world I always get a photo of me with a Coca-cola in each country!

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A: Well, I am the lucky owner of a dress that was formerly Micheline Pitt’s but it is also vintage!  I dream of the glamorous evening and events it went to.  Isn’t that the fun of a vintage dress?  The mystery behind it, who wore you? Where did you go? You really can let your imagination run wild! I’m sure besides Micheline, someone else very glamorous wore my dress!

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Miss Pinup NZ competition coming along?  Would you like to offer our readers any “teasers” with regard to your particular talent or your outfits for Miss Pinup NZ?
A:  Well darling I’d love to share it all with you because I’m so excited!  But oh, I do love a surprise don’t you?

I can say that I think the lovely items I have chosen are a real reflection of me and my personality.  I have a rule about what I wear and it’s that I have to LOVE it and I can honestly say everything I will be wearing I looooooooveeee !

Question four:
If you could pick a theme song to walk onto the Miss Pinup stage to, what would it be?
A:  This is kind of a funny one, also not really vintage!  But nevertheless, you don’t choose what music moves you!  I feel like this song empowers me at moments when I need a little pick-me-up or motivation to do something I want to but am terrified to do … it is: “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi.

A:  Well golly Mumpty – all of these ideas sound great!  Oh dear – you are giving me ideas!  I think besides a few tears, a kiss for my dapper Gent, and of course hugging all of the lovely ladies, it’s hard to say.  I’m a gal of mystery and I love that I don’t know! So I guess I’m looking forward to the mystery of it all!

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  Well now, I think most pinups would say their lipstick and well, I’m inclined to agree whole-heartedly with them!  There is nothing like that perfect shade of lipstick that just somehow makes you feel complete.  I’m going to add to that, a vintage compact, because a gal needs a mirror to apply that lippy and I don’t go anywhere without mine!

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Pinup NZ 2015 experience?
A:  Well now this is easy!  A chance to meet other like-minded people and to make friends!  It feels like our scene here is growing quickly and there are always new and exciting people to meet and go on adventures with!

Soooo … without further ado; meet the next gorgeous pinup in our Pinup Platoon – Miss Pinup NZ Finalist for 2015:

Fancifora Foxglove …

MumptyStyle Fancifora Foxglove 2Question one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  I am fairly certain I am New Zealand’s only bionic burlesque performer and real life porcelain doll!  Something that may come as a surprise because of my “youthfulness” is that last year I underwent full hip replacement surgery – a procedure generally only performed on elderly people. So I now have a ceramic hip with titanium pins! I developed early onset arthritis after being born with hip dysplasia so my joint wore out a lot faster than most.  However, since the operation I feel as good as new and am now able to high kick my way through my burlesque routines again.  My doctor says I am never allowed to run again though …which is actually a relief, because I despise running.

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A:  My custom-made corset from Purdy Corsetry would probably whinge about how hard I make her work!  She is made of sturdy raw silk with strong lacing, but by golly she fights hard to keep my silhouette a dramatic hourglass shape. I pull her, tug her, make her spiral steel boning bend and warm to the shape of my torso.  She disappears under wiggle dresses or stands alone as the feature of a burlesque outfit in her own right.  She prompts ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aah’s’ and gasps of shock as people stare at my waspish waist, only seen before on cartoon characters.  She would speak of how she is special and unique, tailor-made to one person only, like a fingerprint.  She would boast at how those off the rack knock-off’s have nothing on her. They don’t understand my body; they crush the ribs and can’t deliver the level of extreme curve I desire.  She will feel superior and more than just a fashion item because she is a sculptured work of art with purpose, beauty and function.

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Miss Pinup NZ competition coming along?  Would you like to offer our readers any “teasers” with regard to your particular talent or your outfits for Miss Pinup NZ?
A:  I think it’s no surprise I will be doing a burlesque routine for the talent section.  All I can reveal is my performance will be one of my classic “good-girl-goes-bad” archetypes, to my all-time favourite Elvis track.

Another titbit is that my outfits will all be original vintage numbers.

Question four:
If you could pick a theme song to walk onto the Miss Pinup stage to, what would it be?
A:  “The Girl Can’t Help It” – sung by Little Richard from the movie of the same name – starring the stunning Jayne Mansfield whose character is an overt parody of Marilyn Monroe.  The film features her walking down the street to that song, hips swinging seductively as she attracts stares of amazement from passers-by.  I could not help but feel just as fabulous as Jayne as I strut my way down the catwalk.

A:  Definitely option “A” – you had me at “champagne!”

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  It is so tough to choose just one but I’m going to be a bit predictable here and go with a bright but matte lipstick (usually red.)  I could be wearing nothing but jim jams and as long as I am wearing a bold lipstick I feel as glam as can be.

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Pinup NZ 2015 experience?
A:  Firstly, just the opportunity to get my glad rags on and revel in all things vintage with other like-minded people for an entire weekend!  The VVDO is always a highlight of my year, I have attended all but one since it began and the Miss Pinup Competition is the final frontier (other than actually travelling via time machine to experience my favourite eras first-hand!)

I am also really excited about the performance aspects of the competition, both dancing onstage and shooting with photographers after having several months away from the glam life recovering from my operation.  I am hoping to make a real “splash” of a comeback with participating in this competition to tell the world I’m back, I’m bionic and I’m better than ever!

The Pinup Platoon

As you know, March is the month of The Pinup Platoon (pictured above) on MumptyStyle.com.  You will see from the interviews that have been posted, and those that are still to come, that these women are a group of accomplished, confident, talented ladies who are well supported and who have exciting and positive things going on in their lives.

Unfortunately, it’s not like that for every woman in New Zealand and so I would like to take this opportunity, in a month where we’re focusing on the fabulousness of women, to talk to you about the RAW initiative by Annah Stretton.

MumptyStyle RAW

RAW (Reclaim Another Woman) is an initiative developed by Annah and her team to help break the cycle of family violence, repeat offending, poverty and disadvantage for some New Zealand women.  The RAW programme is designed to help these women develop the resources they need to keep them from returning to violent relationships or prison.

As you know, women are key influencers in terms of families and communities, so helping these women make long term, positive changes means they will go on to influence those around them as well.

How does it work?
Women from challenging circumstances who are ready and willing to make a long-term change are matched with female mentors who guide them along the path to transformation via education and support.  Most of the women who are in the RAW programme come from a background of generational violence, benefit dependence and educational underachievement.  They are matched with women from advantaged, capable and successful backgrounds (RAW Angels) and there is a long-term commitment made by both parties.

Raw logo

Could YOU be a RAW mentor (angel)?
It is a big commitment, but you would be well-supported by RAW, who have aligned with other agencies already working in the area of family violence.  You would undergo an assessment for suitability and, if successful, an induction process.  Mentors also attend monthly networking meetings whereby information, resources and strategies are shared.

How else can you help?
If you can’t commit to being a long-term mentor but still want to assist the RAW initiative, you can!  You can make a donation to RAW and you can also become a Friend of RAW, which means you will receive an email newsletter keeping you up-to-date with RAW and offering other opportunities in which you can help – maybe fundraising, volunteering time etc.  You could even become a RAW Aunty which means you would volunteer your support for a child, or children, of a woman in the RAW programme.

You can purchase from the RAW Collection …
RAW collectionAnnah Stretton’s team have designed a collection of essential garments for every woman’s wardrobe – every garment is interchangeable and works well for women of any size or shape.

All proceeds of the RAW Collection go toward RAW and its operations.  You can purchase from the RAW Collection by clicking the link above.

Question one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  That’s a tough one!  To fulfil both the “interesting” and “most people won’t know” part anyway!  When I finished school, I was runner-up Dux. And yes there were more than two people in my year!

I have a perfect heart shaped freckle on the top of my left breast.

I met my husband whilst skinny dipping in a river!

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A:  Well my fave item would probably be one of my Rago waist cinchers!  Good foundations make a great outfit.

It would be far too difficult to pick one favourite dress or one pair of shoes!  And anyway, I’d hope they were better at keeping secrets haha!

My cincher would probably say “Why wasn’t I brought into this world as a lovely pair of stockings?  All I do is work until near breaking point and for what?  I never get to see any of the interesting stuff!!”

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Miss Pinup NZ competition coming along?  Would you like to offer our readers any “teasers” with regard to your particular talent or your outfits for Miss Pinup NZ?
A:  I am enjoying putting together my ensembles for Miss Pinup, as styling and sourcing items for a special outfit is one of my favourite things!  And I’m only going to say that all of my outfits have a key theme – you’ll have to find out on the day.

Talent-wise, you can expect to see the character and my alter ego Miss Lorelei Louise take the stage … you were introduced to her in my entry video, and she will have something special and entertaining to share … is that teasing enough!?

Question four:
If you could pick a theme song to walk onto the Miss Pinup stage to, what would it be?
A:  “Dynamite” by Tami Neilson.

A:  I think a) sounds the most in character for me!  There would definitely be plenty of champagne and fun with friends… definitely not with a gold-plated (or otherwise!) straw; probably no guzzling (I am a lady after all!) … perhaps some drinking out of the bottle though (not TOO much of a lady!)

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  Favourite?  Or most necessary!  Favourite would definitely be lipstick – any one of the bold and bright colours I love!  But the item I would not leave the house without is a good BB cream … moisturiser, sunscreen and a hint of cover all in one.  Brilliant, and some days, all I wear!

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Pinup NZ 2015 experience?
A:  Well I’m hoping to win, of course! Haha.

No really, just being a part of the finals is amazing, it really will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience in so many ways!

In a time in my life where I am looking for focus and a new direction, I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity.  I am excited to get the chance to really show what I can do, and to challenge myself to learn and do new things.

I also think it’s pretty awesome that I know and am friends with so many of the other finalists … it will be so much FUN!

Soda Fontaine …

MumptyStyle Soda FontaineQuestion one:
Tell me something interesting about yourself most people won’t already know.
A:  This is a hard one!  Hmm … I’m actually quite a shy person, but my love for pinup and burlesque has really made me get myself out there, network and challenge myself.  I’m really proud that I pushed aside my fears and pursued what I love.

Question two:
Think about your favourite outfit; your favourite pair of shoes; your favourite suspender belt … whatever!  If that particular item in your pinup kit could talk, what story do you think it would be most likely to tell?
A: If my favourite pinup dresses could talk, they would tell you all about my travel adventures … I love to travel! I have visited 17 countries so far and I definitely plan on increasing that number.

My dresses would mostly talk about America though – I have visited the USA six times so far and been to seven states.

One story they would tell was how my BFF and I road-tripped from Los Angeles to San Francisco so I could get my first tattoo from one of my favourite tattoo shops called Spider Murpheys. I’m not going to lie, the tattoo really hurt but it was so worth it!

Question three:
How is your preparation for the Miss Pinup NZ competition coming along?  Would you like to offer our readers any “teasers” with regard to your particular talent or your outfits for Miss Pinup NZ?
A:  It’s going really well.  There are only a couple of accessories I still need to buy.  I managed to keep on-track by keeping a diary of what I need for each outfit and what I require for my talent.

I’ve really enjoyed the process of planning everything out.  A little teaser huh … well I am not willing to give away too much but I will say that Honey L’Amour is working on my beach outfit and I am so excited to see the end result.

Question four:
If you could pick a theme song to walk onto the Miss Pinup stage to, what would it be?
A:  -I love alternative rock music but I don’t think any of those kind of songs would be fitting. But I also love Katy Perry, so I would have to say her song “Roar.”  It’s not my top favourite Katy song, but it makes a great “I can take on anything” theme song 🙂

Question five:
If  you were to win Miss Pinup NZ 2015, how would you most likely celebrate your win from the options below:

a) I’d guzzle champagne through a gold-plated straw and get lightheaded and dizzy with all my friends.

e) Go to a karaoke bar and sing your own praises.
f) Other (please specify!)
A:  D) Take my crown on a road trip, Instagramming my antics all the way!

Question six:
What is your most favourite item in your pinup kit, and why?
A:  My Magic Ink liquid eyeliner from Benefit Cosmetics.  It’s so easy to use and it doesn’t rub off during the day.  Plus I just love having cat eyes.

And last, but certainly not least …

Question seven:
What are you most hoping to get out of the Miss Pinup NZ 2015 experience?
A:  To feel proud that I did my best and to feel a sense of accomplishment.  Also hoping it will allow more doors to open for me.  I just can’t wait for the whole VVDO/Miss Pinup weekend. It’s going to be the best experience 🙂
