I hope you enjoy it even half as much as I do!

The MUO Beauty Box … oh my!

The MUO Beauty Box … oh my!

MUO Beauty Box Collage

Makeup Obsessives is the wonderful, 33,000-member-strong Facebook group and website/blog of Kirsty Leigh, a beauty blogger extraordinaire and just a generally amazing (and often, hilarious) woman.  As you can see below, she is quite the babe too!  (Click here for my “Inspirational Women” interview with Kirsty)

KirstyAnyway … Kirsty does an amazing job with her two groups; Makeup Obsessives and it’s sister group, MUO Lifestyle.  She decided recently to step up her game even further by releasing the inaugural Makeup Obsessives Beauty Box.  As an admin of both groups, I was lucky enough to get one of the boxes and phewwwww … I am very pleased I did!

Be warned – LOOOONNNNNGGGGG, pic-heavy post ahead.  And I make no excuses for this because the bloody Beauty Box was soooo good, it simply HAD to be a long post – there was just no getting round it!  So grab a glass of wine, or a coffee if you can’t do that, and read on.

The boxes were very limited edition (80 only) and were available on a first-come, first-served basis for $70.  When mine arrived I literally got myself into a bit of a frenzy – hush, like you wouldn’t have done the same if a bloody big box of makeup and skincare arrived on your doorstep with a big pink bow around it!  As you can see from the pictures above, the box was packed with both full-size and sample-size products in a combination of higher-end and well-known drugstore brands – with a retail value of over $300 – for $70!!!  I KNOW!!! Because pictures tell a thousand words, check out the pic below of the MUO Beauty Box, unboxed!

Soo … if you’re interested, I’m gonna hop to and show you what I got, one-by-one (or in little groups anyway.)  If you’re not that interested … see ya – and thanks for reading this far!  If you are (and don’t forget, Kirsty is considering doing another run of them) … let’s get on with this!

OK … so, I’m going to do the samples first.  Obviously I just got them, so as I use them I will update this post with my thoughts.MUO_BB_Samples

Living Nature – cleanser, toner and moisturiser for sensitive skin.  I’ve used all three of these twice now – they smell divine (like roasted coconut) and my skin felt like a baby … would definitely think about buying this range.
Bioré Deep Pore Charcoal cleanser – I’ve used this one before and it’s great.  It’s a kind of clear:grey gel and it’s really soothing.
Bioré Combination Skin balancing cleanser – haven’t tried it yet, but will do once I use up the Living Nature samples.
Skinfood mud masque – this made it’s way through MUO like wildfire a few weeks back, so I’m keen to give it a go as it was always sold out when I went to buy it!  It says its made of natural Rotorua mud with aloe vera and jojoba oil, so sounds promising right?
Pureology Strength Cure – serum for dry and split ends.  My daughter has “appropriated” this so will report back on her behalf later!
Oasis BB creams – I LOVE these – I got some in my MUO Meetup goodie bag last time, and they make a fabulous primer.  We got three of them this time round and I adore the names; The Bardot (light-warm skin tones); the Monroe (light-medium skin tones) and the Hepburn (medium-dark warm skin tones.)
Palmers Moisture Rich night cream – with retinol, peptide complex, shea butter and aloe.  Tried and true and smells great.
nude by nature, pressed mineral cover –  this is a powder foundation that you can use dry or dampened.  I tried this and my skin looked FABULOUS!  I am HIGHLY likely to purchase a full-size version of this one.

Schwarzkopf essence Ultime Omega Repair shampoo & conditioner for damaged and depleted hair – Claudia Schiffer evidently helped out with this – I wonder how she knew I had dry hair?  Anyway, they are decent-sized samples (50ml) so I am looking forward to getting several washes out of them and being able to toss my glossy mane around like a show pony before long!

MUOBB_DermalogicaDermalogica “kit” – containing a precleanse and an antioxidant hydramist.  Now I am VERY naughty and I do tend to remove my makeup using a Pam’s wipe (!) which I know is very budget, but … it works for me!  However, I used the precleanse oil last night and it really loosened my makeup, so when I used the wipe to take it off, my skin felt a lot cleaner. I plan to use the  little “hydramist” in my makeup kit for special occasions so I can “freshen” my makeup if I need to. We also got a $20 off voucher which is bloody good ‘cos Dermalogica is not cheap! The little plastic pouch thing these two products came in is also going to improve my “red lipstick survival kit” no end!

Skincare products:

MUOBB_WeledaWeleda Skin Food – for rough and dry skins – full size (RRP $22.90.)  Any mums out there will know the Weleda brand; it’s something you inevitably get introduced to when you have a newborn.  From my experience, their products are all excellent, and I’m picking this one’s no different.  Here’s to fixing those horrible dry heels and elbows … I’ll keep you updated!

MUOBB_SkinfoodSkinfood light moisturiser – full size (RRP $13.99.)  This includes peach oil, manuka honey, avocado, elderberry and marshmallow extracts.  The Skinfood range SWEPT through the MUO Facebook group, so I’m very keen to give it a go.  I currently use Nivea, which I love, so I’m not really a high-end moisturiser consumer you could say – this should suit me well methinks!

MUOBB_GarnierGarnier Moisture Match – ultra-hydrating rich cream – full size (RRP $9.99.)  Another moisturiser – my skin is going to lurve me!  I have tried this already and it’s lovely on my dryish skin.

MUOBB_ManukaDocManuka Doctor apirefine – flawless perfection for high definition – full size (RRP $37.95.)  I’ve heard lots of good things about this product so I’m dying to try it and report back with my results.  It contains purified bee venom and promises a flawless looking complexion, and I, for one, am all in for that!

MUOBB_BodyShopThe Body Shop All-in-One 5-action perfecter – full size (RRP of closest primer on current site $31.50.)  At my age, primers are a godsend, so I’m expecting good things – something The Body Shop products generally deliver.

Tanning products:
In this little lineup we got:
Le Tan Wash Off Bronze – 40g – this is a foam product and it gives a lovely natural colour in my experience.  And if you just happen to have stuffed it up … never fear, because we also got the:
Bronze Buffer self-tan remover – (RRP $15.95) which is a fabulous little star-shaped sponge that you dampen and it miraculously removes those orange knees, ankles and stripes where you didn’t take quiiiite enough time with the application process.

These were one of the highlights for me especially because I LOVE a good red lipstick!  And … I got a good red lipstick (thanks Kirsty!)  So here we go:

MUOBB_karen murrellkaren murrell lipstick in shade 20: True Love – just gorgeous. RRP $30.00.

MUOBB_Caramel kissCovergirl Colourlicious in shade Caramel Kiss – this is a full-size product (RRP approx $12) and I’ve already worn it three days in a row!

MUOBB_ColourdramaMaybelline Colordrama in shade 140 Minimalist – another full-sizer (RRP $11.99.) This is a pretty pinky/nude shade and I love it.  These chubby pencils have received a lot of good press lately and I’m not surprised; they’re great.  I just wish they came with their own sharpener, ‘cos sometimes it’s hard to find one big enough.  But hey … I know someone, who instead of sharpening hers, just buys another!

MUOBB_LushJason & The Argan Oil – full size (RRP $15.90) – no self-respecting MUO Beauty Box would be without a LUSH product right, and this one certainly delivers!  It’s a solid shampoo that smells like rose jam – well, that’s what they say anyway. I don’t know if I would have picked rose jam, but it most definitely smells fabulous.  We also got a free online shipping voucher too.  Thanks LUSH!

Eye pencils, mascaras and shadows:
MUOBB_MascaraShiseido Moisture Mist Impressive Lash mascara in shade black – full-size (RRP $30.)  I’ve used this already and it really makes my LiLash’d lashes pop!  There’s no clumping and it defines them right to the very edges.  The box says it will thicken, lengthen and separate.  It’s also waterproof, but I found the Dermalogica precleanse above removed it beautifully.  Most impressed.
MUOBB_EssenceEssence 3D eyeshadow in shade 03 irresistible choco cupcake – full size (RRP $6.30) – the name alone sold me.  There’s a gorgeous shimmery nude which is beautiful to highlight the brow, and a lovely almost chestnust/coffee colour which is great to define the crease.

MUOBB_EA cream shadowElizabeth Arden cream eyeshadow in shade 01 Sand Dollar – full-size (RRP $45).  This stuff feels AMAZING and imparts a gorgeous, warm bronzey/goldy sheen. Love it.

MUOBB_EApencilElizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour precision glide eyeliner in shade 01 Black Velvet – full size (RRP $47.)  Gorgeous black that you can easily smoke out.  Fab!

Miscellaneous fabulous items

MUOBB_brushnude by nature foundation & buffing brush – I think this might be a promo one as I couldn’t find an RRP, but a similar-sized one without the double end is $19.95 on the Farmers website.) Gorgeous, full-size and soft as a baby’s bottom!  Love this brush.

MUOBB_WipesMakeup.co.nz makeup removal wipes – purrrrfect for travel or weekends away!

Essie nail lacquer in shade Dressed to Kilt –  full size (RRP $22.99.)  Get on my toes – I do love me some red toenails!

So that’s it … finally!  What do you think?  The first lot of Beauty Boxes sold out in minutes – do you think you’d be keen to get in line for subsequent Beauty Boxes if Kirsty decides to go ahead with them?  I know I’m definitely keen, but I also know there’s A LOT of work involved for Kirsty, so fingers crossed she has the energy to do them again huh!  This time round Kirsty was generous enough to include some items from her “prize cupboard” which I haven’t included here as everyone got slightly different things.  Unfortunately this resulted in a few girls complaining about other girls getting different products to them – such a shame really because from my calculations of the core products that went into each Beauty Box, there was $327 worth of product in there, not counting ANY of the samples, nor the “prize cupboard” stuff. Hmmm … great deal much?!

At this juncture I’d just like to say a very big THANK YOU to all the brands who got involved in the MUO Beauty Box.  If you like what you got ladies, go out and buy it!

Love and ridiculous amounts of gorgeous beauty products …

PS: the sharp-eyed amongst you may have noticed there are a couple of products in the “group” photo that were not mentioned.  These were admin gifts so were not received by everyone. Adminning a 33,000-strong group requires a dedicated team and this is one of the ways Kirsty rewards us.

MumptyLoves 14/11/2014

These are the things Mumpty loves this week – 14/11/2014

♥ Nivea In-Shower Smooth Lotion Skin Conditioner

MumptyStyle Nivea

As Kirsty from Makeup Obsessives would say, “I bloody love this stuff!”  And I do!  I got it as part of my Black Box package and so far, I am very impressed.  You know how you get out of the shower, dry yourself off, then mositurise your legs, arms etc – and then you to wait for a while before you put your clothes on because the moisturiser is still a bit sticky?  Nuh-uh – not with this stuff.  It’s kind of a weird concept, but basically what you do is use your normal body wash in the shower, rinse it off and then in the shower, while you’re still wet, you apply this stuff (and it’s goes on SO easily) and then rinse it off, hop out of the shower (or you can just get out – you don’t have to hop!) and dry yourself.  Done!  No waiting around; no sticky legs; you just get dressed and you’re good to go!  Perfect!  And it really does moisturise too, which is handy given that’s what it claims to do!

♥  Bombshell Burlesque (Glamilton)
MumptyStyle Michelle CherryThis is my burlesque class and I LOVE spending my Wednesday evenings at class – I get to dress up and strut around posing and having lots of fun with my fellow class members – and, of course, our brillant Head Mistress, Ms Tittle Tattle. If you’re in Glamilton, come along … you will love it! If you have always been curious about burlesque but haven’t tried it – I urge you to get along to a local class and give it a go. I swear there’s a good chance it will change your life. I wrote a post about how it changed mine here. Mwahhhh!

♥ Chocolate Box Sparkling Shiraz

MumptyStyle Chocolate Box Sparkling Shiraz

Now I’m not normally a red wine drinker, but a couple of years ago we were given a bottle of this as a gift, along with the promise that it would “totally convert you.”  And my goodness, it did!  I still don’t drink red wine, but I do drink this!   It’s an Australian sparkling shiraz made from premium Barossa grapes and in my professional sommelier’s opinion, it’s YUM!  (That’s a technical wine term!)  They’re billing it as the perfect wine to accompany your Christmas turkey and ham and also as the perfect drop to leave out for Santa.  Sorry Santa … it won’t be hanging round on the mantelpiece at our place!  Retail price is approx. NZ$29.99

♥ Miss Bettsy Rose Lee’s Bountiful Bachelorette Bash! MumptyLoves BBBOver the weekend I was lucky enough to be “Door Dolly” at local Glamilton diva, Miss Bettsy Rose Lee’s Bountiful Bachelerette Bash!  It was a fabulous show and a wonderful way to celebrate her last few days of single life!  Miss Bettsy has allowed me to write about it on next week’s blog, so I won’t say any more *wink*  (Photo by David Rowe Photography

♥ One of my long-time favourite blogs: Yes and Yes MumptyStyle Yes and Yes

MumptyStyle Sarah von BargenSarah von Bargen’s “Yes and Yes – because Yes is more fun than No” is one of the most enjoyable blogs I follow.  I’ve  followed her for about three years now and that’s a testament to a) her content; b) her professionalism and sense of humour and c) the frequency with which she posts.  Sarah is a very talented writer and an international traveler – check her blog out for awesome features like “True Story: …” Web Time Wasters, Network of Nice and lots of cool discussions on travel, business, blogging, fashion, food and just being generally awesome!

♥ My “local” – Punnet CafeMumptyStyle PunnetLocated just five minutes from home, Punnet Cafe is an essential stop on my way to work and has been for a good couple of years now!  They serve great coffee and food; it’s a gorgeous place (and even better now having undergone extensive renovations recently) and the staff and owners are awesome!    Check out their Facebook page here … this weekend they’re having their big Strawberry Farm Festival to celebrate the new season; the strawberries being available and the opening of the new playground and renovations.  There is also a truly fabulous grocery and collectible store as part of the complex – their Facebook page is here.

And to round up MumptyLoves this week … the Louboutins!

MumptyStyle Louboutin Justinodos

The Justinodo by Christian Louboutin – aren’t they gorgeous?!  The bows are killer and I love the gold accent at the back.

MumptyLoves 07/11/2014

These are the things Mumpty loves this week – 07/11/2014

♥ Trilogy Rosapene night cream and Rosehip Antioxidant Oil  MumptyStyle Trilogy
My skin was so.bloody.relieved when this little duo arrived in the mail!  Since I ran out of moisturiser about a month ago, I’ve been dabbling in all sorts samplers and testers and my skin finally rebelled and said “Give it up Mumpty and get me the good stuff, or you’ll pay – I’ll bust out the wrinkles.”  And at first I didn’t listen, and so the wrinkles got busted out – and my goodness, I got that Rosapene business back on my bathroom shelf quick-as-a-wink!  At my age, if your skin gets dry, you might as well send those wrinkles a written invite to come and stay!

Thankfully the Trilogy Rosapene night cream, in conjunction with the Rosehip Antioxidant Oil, sorted out my skin’s woes and it’s now feeling all properly hydrated and plump again; thus minimising my wrinkles character-proving-laugh-lines.

♥  This iconic Chanel “charms handbag” … MumptyStyle ChanelNow I wouldn’t normally feature a Chanel handbag on here because I am an extremly loyal Louis Vuitton fan (!) however this vintage one is beautiful and I am a sucker for charmy things like this!  Chanel really do create some lovely handbags and this collector’s piece is certainly one of them.  Which is your favourite charm?  Mine is the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle, followed closely by anything with a crown.

♥ Our daughter has turned ten and this was her birthday cake! MumptyStyle Birthday CakeEvery year I decorate our daughter’s birthday cake in whatever theme she chooses; in the past she’s had piggys, Shrek, In the Night Garden, daisies, The Faraway Tree – all sorts!  This year, she made it suuuuper-difficult by wanting not only owls, but Olaf and Lego as well!  While I’m not actually 100% happy with any of the elements, I think overall it was a kinda cool cake and since I was up till 1am making it, I went a little easy on myself for Olaf being a slightly “Halloween” version of himself!  Anyway, she loved it, so that’s me done and dusted for another year on the cake-decorating front!  Do you decorate your own cakes?  It’s kinda fun/kinda “I-wish-I-had-never-gone-there-in-the-first-place-and-set-up-that-expectation” right?!

♥ L’oreal Skin Perfection Advanced Serum MumptyStyle Skin PerfectionI got this a) on the recommendation of Kirsty Leigh at Makeup Obsessives; and b) because it has pretty pink packaging!  (Check out Kirsty’s cute vlog on the full range here.) Although I’ve only been using it for a week and therefore probably shouldn’t even mention it yet, I’m going to ‘cos I live life on the edge ya’ know!  Anyway … I like it; it glides on easily and leaves my skin feeling super-soft.  Tick from me (and tick from Kirsty too by the way!)

♥ Curves to Kill MumptyStyle Teer WaydeCurves to Kill is the wonderfully visual blog of Teer Wayde, a completely beautiful plus-size model and blogger from Melbourne, Australia.  I’ve been following Teer’s blog for a while now and stylistically it’s gorgeous.  She does some stunning photo shoots as well as providing well-researched reviews for pinup babes.  I highly recommend you check her out.

♥ My blog post on what I’d buy if I had $800 to spend at Sephora … MumptyStyle Guerlain Kiss KissOK … so I’m self-promoting, but let’s face it, if you’re reading this, you may well have already read my post!  And I like my post – it had pretty cool things in it.  If you haven’t already, read it here.

And finally … the Louboutins!  I love this photo so much that I had to include it.  Now are these “killer heels” or what?!

MumptyLoves 31/10/2014

These are the things Mumpty loves this week – 31/10/2014

♥ Karen Farley Age-Defying Intensive Moisturiser
MumptyStyle Karen Farley

This was SUCH a timely little suprise when it arrived in my mailbox!  I had run out of moisturiser a week or so ago; the Sukin sample I’ve been using is just not heavy enough for me and I am waiting for my “courtesy of Flybuys” Trilogy Rosapene cream to turn up.  So getting back to the Karen Farley moisturiser, I ordered a sample of this AGES ago off their website and had forgotten all about it to be honest, so when it turned up, I was happy, happy!  Their products are all-natural and organic so that’s a nice start.  I’ve been using it for three days now and so far I’m loving it; it smells fabulous, feels luxurious to put on and my skin feels plump and hydrated in the morning (my butt feels plump in the morning too, but I think that’s just too many carbs!)  I’m liking this one and think I might buy a full-sized one when my Rosapene runs out.

♥  The Louis Vuitton Icons collection – Cindy Sherman
MumptyStyle Iconoclasts Messenger
In last week’s MumptyLoves we looked at Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld.  This week it’s the Cindy Sherman collaboration – Cindy created one of the most gorgeous, limited edition items I’ve ever seen; the “Studio in a Trunk” featuring silk-screened patches that recall vintage hotel labels; a luxurious vanity case; a camera Messenger bag and a total of 31 drawers to accommodate treasures large and small.  The colours dazzle and are based on the hues of Cindy’s pet macaw, Mister Frida; there’s even a fold-up stool!  Louis Vuitton has only created 25 of these, so if any of my photographer friends are keen, you’ll have to get in quick!

♥ My new skirt from Pinup Girl Clothing … the Jenny skirt in the Dancing Horses print

MumptyStyle Dancing Horses Jenny

I’ve been wanting this for a while so when it came on sale, I decided I was just damm well going to get it.  And guess what?  It fits; it’s pretty and it’s very, very girly!  ‘Nuff said.  And goodness; the shipping was fast.  I ordered it on Friday and it arrived Tuesday lunchtime – impressive huh.  Especially since the Monday was a long weekend.  Well done PUG – you rule!

♥ Lime Crime Velvetine in Suedeberry

Mumptystyle Limecrime Suedeberry

I love the Lime Crime Velvetines – they go on well, last forever (like FOREVER!) and although I love the bloody-near-impossible-to-find Red Velvet, I am still very much enamoured by the gorgeous hue known as Suedeberry – particuarly with summer coming up.  The picture above is a bit rubbish when it comes to demonstrating how great Suedeberry is, but it’s all I could find OK?!  I did a little review of the Velvetines here – it was a facelip-off between OCC Lip Tars and Lime Crime Velvetines – check it out!

♥ Blogging

Top L-R: Joanne Gair, Miss Victory Violet, Elvis Presley. Middle L-R: Marilyn Monroe, Paula Penfold. Bottom L-R: Kylie Bax, Miss Chevious Cinders, Kirsty Leigh

Even though I’m still only a “baby blogger” and have only been blogging five minutes in the scheme of things, I’m absolutely loving it – I can’t believe I didn’t start my wee blog AGES ago!  If you’re reading this, I hope you’re enjoying my blog as much as I am – check out all the awesome people I’ve been able to talk to already – so cool – and I’ve got lots more in the pipeline too.  If you want to read any of these Q&A’s, click here.

♥ Lewis Road Creamery Chocolate Milk …

MumptyStyle Lewis Road

If you’re in New Zealand and you haven’t heard of the cult-like Lewis Road Creamery Chocolate Milk, you must have been living under a rock!  Billed as the “perfect marriage” between Lewis Road Premium Whole Milk and Whitaker’s  5 Roll Refined Creamy Milk Chocolate – and it is DIVINE – you will not taste better!  Hunt it down …

And finally … these!  Aren’t they bloody gorgeous – and so understatedly (!) glam !  The Christian Louboutin Pensee – these would SO match my earrings *wink*

Inspirational women – Kirsty Leigh

Five quick-fire questions with inspirational women … Kirsty Leigh

A few weeks back I was thinking about my friends, the women I’ve met and and some of the other fabulous women you see and read about in the media.  It struck me then how inspirational many of them have been to me in one way or another, and so I decided to do a little series on my blog, acknowledging some of these gorgeous women.

MumptyStyle Kirsty Leigh

When thinking about the questions I wanted to ask, I decided I needed to put a couple of rules in place – only so as to ensure I got diverse answers!  You’ll see what I mean when you see the rules.

The rules:
1) You can’t choose your children as your greatest achievement – even though they are!
2) You can’t choose your Mum or Dad as your most inspirational person, even though they may well be!

So … I am very honoured to introduce the second fabulous woman in my series of inspirational women, the gorgeous and cheeky Kirsty Leigh.

MumptyStyle Kirsty Leigh

Kirsty, affectionately known as Kirk,  is the stunning founder of Makeup Obsessives; a 29,000 strong (and growing daily) group of makeup lovers.  The Facebook group is complemented by the Makeup Obsessives website and blog, which won Beauty Review’s Best Beauty Blog in 2013.  While Kirsty necessarily has a team of admins to help her oversee the group (of which I am very proud to say, I am one!) Makeup Obsessives is still very much her baby; she writes all the fabulous articles and reviews and is largely responsible for the positive culture for which Makeup Obsessives is known.

MumptyStyle Kirsty

Q1.  In 10 words or less, what are you most proud of?
A. Creating a “ahurutanga” – a safe environment where nobody feels judged.

Q2.  Can you give me two habits that make you successful at what you do?
A. I guess I’m fairly tenacious … if I want something, I’m pretty determined to get it.  Like a dog with a bone, really.  Awful simile, but apt.  I also genuinely love humans – as a rule.  I love being in touch with and meeting new people every day, and I’m not shy.  If I was meeting Beyonce, mind you, I would be a mess.

Q3. What do you do for yourself that helps keep you going?
A. I rely on my friends!  They are SO good to me, and keep me grounded.  None of them are scared to tell me when I’m being a dick, and I both appreciate and need that.

Q4.  What’s the first name that pops into your head when I ask who inspires you?
A. Barnaby Jack!

Q5. Why?
A. This article here says it all, but in my own words: Barnes was one of the first friends I made in Auckland, and I was always in awe of him.  Not only was he a total super star at what he did, but he was the coolest, nicest, most humble person ever.  He’s an inspiration to many, and missed by all. xxx

Why I find Kirsty so inspiring …
Kirsty is funny, clever, irreverant and savvy.  She also unknowingly gave me the boot I needed to start my own blog when she asked for contributing writers for her website.  I jumped at the opportunity and enjoyed it so much I decided to finally get off my butt (!) and give my own blog a go (albeit on a different topic to Makeup Obsessives of course!)  There are many, many more reasons to admire Kirsty and what she’s achieved with Makeup Obsessives so far  (**cough – one of the winners of the Westpac Millennial Women of Influence competition – cough**) – I’m so proud to be a small part of her team.

Thanks so much for your answers Kirsty – I love the concept of ahurutanga – it’s perfect for Makeup Obsessives.
