Three (more) things I’d buy a million times over, and one I wouldn’t bother with again

Three (more) things I’d buy a million times over, and one I wouldn’t bother with again …

Gratuitous Snapchat-filtered shot of Mumpty!

Back in February last year, I wrote this post about three things I’d buy a million times over, and two I wouldn’t bother with again.  So, back then I was thinking about some of the products I’ve purchased as a result of online “hype” and whether or not that “hype” was actually justified in the product itself.   I’ve decided to do an updated version, but I only really had one that was just not worth buying again.

So – here are three things I would definitely buy over and over again …

Maybelline FIT Me foundation

I love this stuff …
a) It’s cheap – $24 odd in New Zealand – I got mine on sale for $16.
b) It’s readily available – I bought it in the supermarket.
c) It applies like a dream and leaves you with a gorgeous, dewy, medium-coverage finish – apply more and you’ll get full coverage.
d) It lasts super well.
e) It has a sunscreen in it – SPF18.
f) Did I mention it’s cheap and works just as well as its more expensive counterparts?

The drawbacks (don’t worry – they’re minor) …
a) It can get a bit shiny, but I believe they have a very good (and again, cheap) powder to finish it with.
b) It doesn’t have a dispenser which is a bit annoying.
c) There weren’t any testers at the supermarket *wink* – I’m sure department stores would have them though!

So go get it!

The Balm “The Manizer Sisters” palette

The Balm-Manizers palette

I reviewed it here (and wow, a LOT of people have read that post!) and I STILL love it to bits.  I have all but run out of the Cindy-Lou Manizer so am going to be buying the full size version of that one very soon.  Buy it – you won’t regret it.

And having said that … I know this is a sneaky fourth thing, but The Balm Instain Blushers are GORGEOUS.  Amazingly pigmented and such pretty colours.  I currently have two – Pinstripe and Argyle – but I WILL be collecting more.

I LOVE the packaging by The Balm too.  So retro and pretty.

GlamEyes Liquid Eyeliner by Rimmel

Rimmel Glam Eyes

This is an everlasting love of mine … the brush is fine, so it’s easy to apply and gives a lovely “flick” for those of us who love cat eyes (which in my case have to be bat eyes); it’s a lovely opaque black; it’s cheap, readily available and stays on super-well.  And despite staying put so well, it’s easy to remove at the end of the day – *bonus*.

And here is the product I’ve bought lately that I definitely wouldn’t bother purchasing again.

Chi Chi Eye Brightener

Chi Chi eye brightener

Honestly, just don’t bother.  I know I’m old and my eyes are probably not easily brightened, but I found this product basically useless.  Which is sad, because I really wanted to like it.  It didn’t apply easily; it didn’t make any discernible difference to how bright my eyes appeared and it didn’t last very long either.  Now possibly I was expecting a miracle, but it sure ‘aint that – I’m just thankful it was under $20, so not a greatly expensive waste of money, although a waste of money all the same.  Anyone reading have better results?

Have you ever given in to the hype, purchased something and then wondered what all the fuss was about?  I’d love to hear about it!

Miracles (and mistakes) do happen …

Winter essentials …

Winter essentials  …

Rain and rainbows

This post was inspired by the “summer essentials” tag I did last summer. Anyway, because I enjoyed putting that one together so much,  I decided to do a winter version … and here it is!

1) What is your ultimate winter party season lip product?
Jeffree Star’s Velour Liquid Lipstick in Red Rum.  Sooooo good for that glamorous pop of red that is absolutely necessary for a winter party outfit!  If you’re interested, I did a review on it a while ago and it gets viewed over and over again!

RedRum logo

2) What is your essential product for winter?
Agadir Argan Oil spray treatment – I LOVE THIS STUFF!  I have very fine hair, and I can use this beautiful light spray liberally and it never seems to weigh it down or make it look oily; but it does leave it looking shiny and silky and holds the flyways down.  I get it from my hairdresser and it’s a godsend.  It also smells divine.

Agadir Argan Oil 3) What’s next on your wish list?
When I saw this Shiseido Synchro Skin foundation on makeup blogger, Kirsty Leigh, from Makeup Obsessives, I knew I had to try it!  I have been a Shiseido user from way back and have always loved it, so I popped into the Shiseido counter and got a wee tester.  And guess what?  It is BRILLIANT, so I’m off to buy the full-sized version …

Shiseido Synchro Skin

4) Name one beauty essential that is never missing from your handbag during the colder months.
A Nivea Lip Butter of some description – I HATE having dry lips, so I always keep one of these in my handbag.  My current favourite is the Vanilla Macadamia one, but next up is going to be the Caramel Cream for sure!  There’s just one minor irritation with these cute wee tins – sometimes they’re hard to open so they’re probably not ideal if you have false nails.

5) What are your winter weather skincare saviours?
Regular home facials (I alternate between the Manuka Doctor apiclear Purifying Facial Peel and the Manuka Doctor apinourish Rejuvenating Face Mask) and lots of moisturiser!  I use Nivea Soft  moisturiser because it’s cheap, but it’s also the best one I’ve found for my skin, so why turn your nose up just because it’s cheap right?!  I also do an at-least-weekly hair mask – I like Lush’s H’Suan Wen Hua mask – it leaves my hair feeling fabulous.

 6) What is winter going to smell like this year?
It’s smelling like Viktor & Rolfe Flower Bomb!

MumptyStyle ViktorandRolf
7) What’s your favourite winter makeup tip?
If you’re using a foundation brush to apply your foundation, buff it in as much as you can with your brush, and then follow up LIGHTLY with a slightly damp Beauty Blender to make sure all the little nooks and crannies are smooth and blended.

8) What are you greatest winter indulgences?
Soy cappuccinos at Punnet and Two Birds @ Narrows Landing  lazy internet browsing  Snuggling up on the couch in a soft blanket reading a good book   Watching Crime TV on a Sunday afternoon while doing the ironing for the week  B.A.I.T shoes in jewel and pastel colours  Winter frocks  Emerald Dita cardies.

9) LUSH winter – your top pick?
A French Kiss Bubble Bar … this looks and sounds like a real treat!  It has calming rosemary and lavender which is perfect for potentially stressed and dry winter skin.

French Kiss

10) Name one (or more) random winter essentials.
Beautiful pashminas in gorgeous jewell colours to add warmth and pizazz  to your outfit, without bulk. Jewell-coloured berets – I have a teal one winging it’s way to me now! Polkadots on everything!  Brooches – always gorgeous on winter ensembles … here’s my latest one – the Audrey brooch by Deer Arrow – she even has a sparkly crown!

Here’s to a snuggly and glamorous winter …

M.A.C Makeup Party: the Mumpty edition

M.A.C Makeup Party: the Mumpty edition …

MACmakeupparty2On Wednesday, the 13th of April, M.A.C launched their first ever “counter parties” in New Zealand. There were nine parties in all, held across the country and hosted by local beauty bloggers.

Mumpty was lucky enough to attend the Hamilton #macmakeupparty, with her daughter, hosted by beauty blogger, Kirsty Leigh of Makeup Obsessives.

Clockwise L-R: our M.A.C artists (Natalie, Baillie and Lochie;) lipstick goals; drinks and nibbles; the new Ariana Grande Viva Glam lipstick and gloss.

We were greeted warmly by the gorgeous M.A.C artists (Natalie, Baillie and Lochie) at the M.A.C counter in Farmers, Centreplace  – and what total babes they are.  Their makeup? You guessed it  … immaculate.  You can truly see the artistry right there on their faces!

So after a few wines and nibbles we got started.  The three M.A.C artists were teamed up with (in our case) three lucky VIP guests, and we were each given the opportunity to choose two things we’d like to get some advice on … so, brows, lips, contouring, eyes – that kind of thing.

Our artist was Lochie – who was FABULOUS.  Lochie does a lot of M.A.C’s training and is also part of their artistry team, so he does Fashion Week; photo shoots – all that glam stuff.  So I guess we were pretty lucky right?!

Kirsty went first and she asked Lochie to do a subtle, understated look to suit her personality. Actually that’s not true – she asked for ALL.OUT.KYLIE.JENNER – contouring so sharp it  could amputate your fingers and nude, ovvvvvverdrawn lips! And Lochie, bless him,  delivered.

“Kirsty Jenner” – overdrawn lips and razor sharp cheekbones. (Not pictured – butt implants.)

Kirsty and I were BLOWN.AWAY by the contouring tips Lochie shared with us – whilst it was slightly mortifying to know we had been doing it all wrong, the excitement of having cheekbones more than made up for it!  And by the way – M.A.C Harmony blush seems to be the shiz when it comes to contouring – Lochie says “it’s ashy, so you won’t get that orangey look you see so often with contouring.”  So you have been told – get on it ladies.

When it comes to the lips, he had some great tips about rounding the lip out and making sure you NEVER overdraw into the edges of your mouth because THAT’s when you start to look like a clown.  Keep it nice and tight to the line in those corners ladies!

I’m pretty sure, but not 100% sure, that he used the ol’ favourite blogger combination for Kylie lips; M.A.C Whirl lipliner and M.A.C Velvet Teddy – or he might have used Soar.  Either way, #soKylie.  M.A.C have helpfully put together a section on their website called the Original Perfect Pout – which details all the products you need to get that Instagram-worthy, nude look.

macmakeupparty5Mumpty’s daughter was next – now obviously she is very young and so doesn’t wear makeup yet, however, she does love to practice on me, so when Kirsty offered her a spot on the team, we couldn’t really refuse now could we?  And how many chances do you get to have a M.A.C trainer do your makeup huh?!  And plus – it was nice for me to have an evening out with my girl.

So, my daughter opted for a very natural, dewy look and Lochie showed her how to apply a base to even out her skin tone and then he showed her how to enhance her beautiful eyes.  Lochie applied some gorgeous natural colours to her eyes, which I don’t remember the name of – whoops!  However, I do remember that he used Sushi Flower which is a really pretty shade on.  Pro tip: if you have pink eyeshadows and you’re not sure how to use them; use them over top of a brown or neutral colour to warm the colour up.

Lochie also used an eyeliner just half-way in on the tops and bottoms of her eyes, which he then went back and smudged to soften the lines.  And hey presto: beautiful!

And then it was Mumpty’s turn! Now I was going to show you how I looked when I arrived (we were asked to turn up with only foundation and concealer) but I don’t think that’s really necessary – for either of us, do you?  I mean, I don’t know when you’re reading this – you could be having dinner for goodness sake!  Suffice to say, it wasn’t my best look.

Anyway … so I asked Lochie to help me with my “wings.”  My favoured makeup look is pinup, and of course, pinups have wings don’t they.  And being that I’m a slightly “mature woman,” I draw on the most delightful wings, and when I open my eyes again; they disappear – like little magicians!

Lochie’s answer to this dilemma? Bat wings!  I did wonder if he was teasing me, but no – he was deadly serious.  As you can see from the picture above, my wings were really pretty. But … this is how they looked up close and looking down so you could see them:

See there’s like a little kind of step thing?  You draw two points; line them up so both eyes are the same; then join the dots.  Whilst it might look a bit funny with your eyes in this position (and really – how often do you do that?) it does mean that when you close them, your wings don’t disappear!

Lochie also helped me with my brows – I didn’t even realise, but one is TOTALLY higher than the other.  Lochie said this is pretty normal though – the things you don’t know huh.  Anyway … he showed me how to even them up and told me that the only place to have a defined line is on your BOTTOM browline – the top should be very diffuse and soft, otherwise they’ll look harsh and drawn on, which is ageing.

Speaking of ageing … I asked Lochie if he had any tips for minimising those frown lines between the brows.  His immediate and helpful response? Botox.  Bless.  Sadly, there’s no other cure.  #CaciClinichereIcome.

Anyway … I then had my lips beautified by a rather glamorous application of M.A.C Ruby Woo – which is, quite simply, divine. I now also want to try M.A.C Red and Lady Danger.

Ruby Woo
M.A.C Ruby Woo

So once we’d all achieved some extremely glamorous looks, we lined up for the obligatory M.A.C Wall pic …

The Makeup Obsessives VIP team at the Mac Makeup Party in Hamilton

And that was a wrap!  Until … on the way out, Laura and I spied this and being the dedicated little MUOs that we are, we decided we simply MUST swatch it.

And OMG … it is RIDICULOUS.  That colour in the middle?  Pure rose gold. It is actually DELISH.  It’s called Mineralise Skinfinish Future M.A.C  You’re welcome.

How do you get your own M.A.C Makeup Party?
Call or visit your local M.A.C counter – the parties/lessons are $90 each and you get one M.A.C makeup artist per three people.  The $90 is redeemable  on product on the night, and believe me, you’ll want to be buying all.the.things.

Well and truly M.A.C-converted, and slightly in awe of Lochie …

MumptyLoves Monday

“Mumpty Loves” Monday

Our garden
How gorgeous is this corner of our garden? Yes, that’s right – SO gorgeous!

In this, the last MumptyLoves for 2015, I show you some of the things I’ve been loving lately …

♥ My new liquid eyeliner by Za

Za liquid eyeliner

I was lucky enough to receive this liquid eyeliner in a Beauty Box from Kirsty at Makeup Obsessives, and, may I just say; it is SUPERB!  It makes winged eyeliner a breeze – it glides on so easily, has a very fine tip so you can get those wings perfect, is a very deep black and then, to top it all off, it stays on super-well.  Perfecto, right?!

♥  Natalie ballet flats in mint
Natalie Ballet Flats
These fab little shoes were an absolute lifesaver just this week – I went Christmas shopping in the local mall and thought I had my trusty Fairy Feet in my bag; but unfortunately I didn’t. I thought I could tough it out in the heels I was wearing, but I soon realised that wasn’t going to happen!  So off I teetered in my heels on the slippery floor (why do they do that at malls by the way?) and found myself at  Number One Shoes – and these little Natalie flats were only $19.99 – bargain with a capital B! Since their life-saving debut, I have worn them nearly every day and not only are they comfortable and practical, they are also cute as hell.  I believe they may soon find themselves accompanied by their lemon,  lilac and silver-coloured cousins!

♥ Trillian

Trillian – pictured with Charlie Atlas and Andre Vegas

I met Trillian for the first time backstage at Cirlesque and she is brilliant – I absolutely LOVED her 20’s flapper performance that night and she is just an all-round great girl. Trillian describes herself as a dancer, singer, fitness instructor/awesomeness coach, choreographer and model.  Also, she is one half of The Ballet School Dropouts!  You can find out more about her at www.verticallyawesome.com or follow her on Facebook by clicking the link above.

♥ This cardy …

I have many of these cardigans from Pinup Girl Clothing, but this is my favourite and it’s also the one I get the most compliments on.  It’s probably a little less red, and a little more orange than the picture suggests.  It’s pretty.

♥ These Christmas tree decorations …

Nerd tree decorations
King Henry VIII and his six wives

HOW COOL ARE THESE?!  I am a right little Tudor nerd so these are HUGE on my want list!  The Cherry Dollface has them and I am super-jealous!  Come hell or high water, they will adorn our tree next year!  You can get them here if you want them too!

♥ Books …

Image via consciouscooking.com

There are so many books I want to read and I CANNOT wait for our holiday when I can do just that!

Highly recommended: Book Club Christmas functions;
my Makeup Obsessives admin team; my recent GRWM;  Seeing Polly Filla’s dress-making posts – so clever; the results of our recent house-washing antics; proud Mummy moments; it being so close to Christmas and therefore; Christmas lunch at Mum and Dad’s.

♥ And lastly, the obligatory Louboutins …
Because it wouldn’t be a MumptyLoves without a pair, now would it?!

Louboutin flats

These are the Corafront Ballerina in Shocking Patent – I am having a bit of a love affair with ballet flats at the moment and I just LOVE the contrast of the hot pink heart with the pinky nude.  Get on my feet!

And because I can, I’m doing two pairs.  The second are these:

CL Very Prive

Good grief.  These are the New Very Prive – isn’t that ombre kind of look just stunning.

What are your favourite things lately?

Loving the good things in life …

Manuka Doctor facial peel review

Manuka Doctor
purifying facial peel

Manuka Doctor

So today I am reviewing the Manuka Doctor apiclear purifying facial peel which I was lucky enough to receive in my last Beauty Box from Kirsty at Makeup Obsessives.

Now as stated in my previous reviews, I don’t pretend to be a “pro-fesh-inal” beauty blogger, and I really can’t be bothered talking about the ingredients; where they’re sourced; the benefits of those ingredients and that sort of stuff!  (Of course that stuff IS important, but you’ll have to go elsewhere – soz.  PS: I believe Shaaanxo of Youtube fame, did a video review on it, so maybe search that out.)  I’m just here to tell you about how it felt when I put it on and what result I got. PS: It contains manuka honey – obviously.

So here’s my wee rundown:

Texture: clay-like, and soothingly cool to apply (probably not so appealing in winter though)
Colour: white
Smell: pleasant – can’t think of a smell it reminds me of, so let’s just say it smells like itself!

Bee facial

And before you say it,  I know … I am glorious!  Bet you’re pleased I didn’t use that as the first pic huh – that would’ve scared you out of your chair!

So anyway … application.
It’s very easy to apply – you basically hold your hair out of the way (Mumpty’s top tip: because if you don’t … it’s veerrrrry hard to get out!) and then smear it across your pre-cleansed face in a thin, even layer, avoiding the mouth, eyes and eyebrows. As you can see, I didn’t do a great job of avoiding my mouth or my eyebrows, but this was my first application and I learnt from it, believe me!

Then you leave it for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you’re stupid like me (see why that was stupid later) and then once it’s all dry and there are no sticky bits; you can start to peel it off.  It’s MOSTLY easy to peel off and actually, quite a lot of fun.

Here I am, mid-peel:

Bee facial 2

As you can see … it peels off just dandy.

Once you’ve had all the fun peeling the major bits off, you can just take a warm facecloth and wipe the rest away.  I, of course, tried to pick and peel the stuff out of my eyebrows and hair for hours before realising there was an easier way. Duh.

The results?
Well … I must say, my skin felt FABULOUS afterwards.  I applied my normal moisturiser and went to bed all glowy and hydrated (my face that is!)  The next morning I swear my fine lines (I like to kid myself they’re still fine!) were minimised and my skin felt quite lush and smooth, which is always a nice thing in the morning isn’t it?

A word of warning … because I was so excited about having such lovely glowy skin, I decided to do it twice in one week, and to leave it on for longer than the recommended period (OK – that part was because I was too lazy to get up and do it until the ads came on.)  So a few days after that, my skin started flaking in little patches around my mouth and nose, which led me to believe that perhaps one shouldn’t be quite so enthusiastic with it – probably weekly is enough.  For reference, my skin is slightly sensitive, but pretty well-behaved really – tending toward dry, rather than oily.

Important public* service announcement – of course, if you’re allergic to bees or pollen or anything like that, you’d kinda want to steer clear of this stuff, bee-ing (did you see what I did there?!) that it contains purified bee venom.

Bee back soon with another review …

Coming to MumptyStyle soon:  my review on L’oreal Serioxyl hair growth system.  Check my Reviews page for other makeup and makeup-related reviews.  And click here for my recent review on the Only Good natural body wash.

* I checked that 12 million times to ensure I didn’t write “pubic” service announcement, because that would have just been embarrassing, right?

The Balm The Manizer Sisters palette review

Review: The Manizer Sisters
palette by The Balm

The Manizer Sisters_Mumpty

Recently I had a birthday  (# 47 to be exact!) and I was pretty excited to receive this palette from my sister (OK, some pretty heavy hinting occurred in the form of an e-mail with a link saying “this is what I want!” I always find its best to be direct in these matters!)

The “Luminizers” from The Balm have achieved almost cult status and I’ve been dying to try them for a long time now.  As part of the Makeup Obsessives admin team, I have heard SUCH good things about the girls; Mary-Lou, Cindy-Lou and Betty-Lou – my main problem was which one I should get first. Thankfully the good folks at The Balm were onto it and solved all my problems in one go with this nifty little palette that has a version of each of the fabulous sisters!

The Manizer SistersObviously, being part of a palette, the pans are smaller than normal – 3 grams each as opposed to the standard 8.5 grams. However, for someone like me who couldn’t decide which one to get, they’re perfect!

Mary-Lou Manizer is the loumaniser or highlight and that’s the one that gives you the gorgeous glowy look – I love to use it on my cheekbones to give them some definition.  As you can see, I have a pretty round face (it matches my body!) and highlighting my cheekbones helps with this!  (By the way – Kylie Bax told me I had beautiful cheekbones at netball the other day, so I am suddenly lovin’ them!)

Cindy-Lou Manizer is a contouring powder.  Now frankly, I’m no good at contouring and can’t really be bothered with the whole palaver, but since I got this one I have  taken to sucking my cheeks in and swooshing it around on the hollowed bits. I’m not sure I’ll be mistaken for Twiggy any time soon,  but I do quite like the subtle shadow effect it gives!

Betty-Lou Manizer is the bronzer of the trio.  And woah … when I first “subtly” applied this I looked like I’d been on sabbatical in the desert.  You need to go lightly with this ladies – start small and build gradually.  It does give you a lovely healthy glow once you get the application technique right though so it’s highly recommended.

Below is a picture of moi, wherein I have applied the Mary-Lou and the Cindy-Lou sisters to my mug.  I don’t know if it’s a great capture, and it’s certainly not the best picture of me, but actually I’ve found it quite difficult to photograph makeup.  I don’t know how the famous YouTubers do it to be honest!  Speaking of YouTubers – how freakin’ GORGEOUS is Carli Bybel?!

Anyway – at least you can see the highlight, if not the contour!

Now as I mentioned earlier, I am part of the Makeup Obsessives admin team, so I hear a lot about all sorts of different products in our group .  Many of them I have tried, due to being the ultimate consumer, but to be honest, the majority just haven’t lived up to the hype.   The Manizer Sisters, however, really do make a difference to my skin and I feel like they give it a lovely glow which is always nice at my age!

If I had to choose, and when I go to repurchase, I would definitely go with the Mary-Lou and the Cindy-Lou first.   And as always with products from The Balm, the packaging is fabulous – Mumpty does love that retro feel and the characters are wonderful.

So that is my little review of my much-loved Manizer Sisters palette from The Balm.  If I had to cut my review to two words; they would be BUY IT!

Coming to MumptyStyle soon:  my reviews on L’oreal Serioxyl hair growth system and Only Good natural body wash.  Check my Reviews page for other makeup and makeup-related reviews.  And click here for my recent review on the Creme de la Creme eyeshadow palette from Sauce Box.

Doing, wanting, reading, loving # 3…

Doing, wanting, reading, eating, loving (v.3) …

Another little round-up of what’s up!

Punnet cakes
Raw cheesecakes by Punnet Cafe in Tamahere
To kick the week off, I thought I’d do another little roundup of what I’m doing, wanting, reading etc etc.  The last one I did was here – and the one before that was here.  So, here goes:

Doing: lots of helping my daughter get her lamb ready for Ag Day – testing her on what she needs to know; holding her lamb while she cleans it etc.  Much as I love these little lambs, I am pretty pleased this is the last one!   being extremely jealous that I didn’t go to the NZ Burlesque Festival in Palmerston North over the weekend.  Every year I think “right, next year I’m going” but I just never seem to get there.  Next year it is then!   being thrilled to bits with my new dress, made for me by the wonderful Judy Dee    tackling my weight via Dukan!  smiling, laughing and just having fun!

Wanting:  last time I said more petticoats and that is still the case.  Since the last edition I have added a black version; however I’m still in want/need of baby blue, lemon, purple and green versions  a nice, fitted leopard print shrug – I’m thinking this one from Wheels & Dollbaby  Wheels&Dollbaby shrug   the Jenny dress  from Pinup Girl Clothing in purple harlequin – I believe this dress is what’s called a “unicorn”
M.A.C Velvet Teddy  a Range Rover Evoque – STILL  Not to sound horribly materialistic – too late right?!

Reading: I am in the middle of a book called “The Shack” and so far it is pretty good.  It received glowing reviews from my Book Club and that’s always a good thing in my books!   And I’ve re-read “The Plains of Passage” by Jean Aeul because I ADORE all of the books from this series  – it’s called the  Earth Child series – if you haven’t read them, I HIGHLY recommend them – aside from my Tudor history books, they are my favourite things to read.

Eating/drinking: squeaky cheese – every night-of-the-weekly-shop we have it!  carbonated water  the chocolate birthday cake my nephew made me – so good   soy lattes from my local and MUCH-LOVED cafe, Punnet (you can read about Punnet here – and also, I stole my opening pic for this post from them!)    salted caramel protein bars (she says, trying to kid herself and failing, that they are better for her!)

Loving: life in general; our daughter and her Daddy specifically!
Daylight Savings  rainbows;  emerald green grass   Instagram   my Book Club (read why you should join one here pink blossoms everywhere   surrounding myself with clever, sassy friends   New Year’s resolutions (early, I know!) my family growing older and learning what is, and what’s not, important to me.

Sending all the love to:  Nat, aka Lilly Loca who is sometimes too hard on herself!  Flo Foxworthy – Flo has an exhibition of her incredible work called “Burlesque – the costume art of Flo Foxworthy” in Palmerston North at the moment – check it out if you’re down that way   Jen from My name is Jennifer and I have breast cancer – an amazing, incredible, phenomenal woman (with a husband and family to match.) Get your breasts checked ladies.  And while we’re talking about that, my gorgeous friend Kirsty from Makeup Obsessives wrote about the time she found a lump.
Read it here.Mammogram

Proud of:   soooo many things, most of them too personal to talk about. But … our daughter – always. My friends, some of whom do amazing things like perform burlesque at shows and festivals and put their hearts and souls into it.   My family – who are incredible and supportive and just cool.

Manizer sistersObsessed with:  frocks my new eyeshadow palette from SauceBox   my new The Manizer Sisters palette from The Balm
my new purple dress; my new black Jenny dress; my new orange cardy and my new gothic lace bolero.  So many new pretties – aren’t birthday’s fabulous!

Grateful for: my family; my friends;  health success and happiness – for everyone  living in the country – all that space and fresh air is bliss plus all of the above!  (I know right – this hasn’t changed since last time – but why fix it if it ‘aint broke?!)

Loving, doing, wanting, reading …

The MUO Beauty Box … oh my!

The MUO Beauty Box … oh my!

MUO Beauty Box Collage

Makeup Obsessives is the wonderful, 33,000-member-strong Facebook group and website/blog of Kirsty Leigh, a beauty blogger extraordinaire and just a generally amazing (and often, hilarious) woman.  As you can see below, she is quite the babe too!  (Click here for my “Inspirational Women” interview with Kirsty)

KirstyAnyway … Kirsty does an amazing job with her two groups; Makeup Obsessives and it’s sister group, MUO Lifestyle.  She decided recently to step up her game even further by releasing the inaugural Makeup Obsessives Beauty Box.  As an admin of both groups, I was lucky enough to get one of the boxes and phewwwww … I am very pleased I did!

Be warned – LOOOONNNNNGGGGG, pic-heavy post ahead.  And I make no excuses for this because the bloody Beauty Box was soooo good, it simply HAD to be a long post – there was just no getting round it!  So grab a glass of wine, or a coffee if you can’t do that, and read on.

The boxes were very limited edition (80 only) and were available on a first-come, first-served basis for $70.  When mine arrived I literally got myself into a bit of a frenzy – hush, like you wouldn’t have done the same if a bloody big box of makeup and skincare arrived on your doorstep with a big pink bow around it!  As you can see from the pictures above, the box was packed with both full-size and sample-size products in a combination of higher-end and well-known drugstore brands – with a retail value of over $300 – for $70!!!  I KNOW!!! Because pictures tell a thousand words, check out the pic below of the MUO Beauty Box, unboxed!

Soo … if you’re interested, I’m gonna hop to and show you what I got, one-by-one (or in little groups anyway.)  If you’re not that interested … see ya – and thanks for reading this far!  If you are (and don’t forget, Kirsty is considering doing another run of them) … let’s get on with this!

OK … so, I’m going to do the samples first.  Obviously I just got them, so as I use them I will update this post with my thoughts.MUO_BB_Samples

Living Nature – cleanser, toner and moisturiser for sensitive skin.  I’ve used all three of these twice now – they smell divine (like roasted coconut) and my skin felt like a baby … would definitely think about buying this range.
Bioré Deep Pore Charcoal cleanser – I’ve used this one before and it’s great.  It’s a kind of clear:grey gel and it’s really soothing.
Bioré Combination Skin balancing cleanser – haven’t tried it yet, but will do once I use up the Living Nature samples.
Skinfood mud masque – this made it’s way through MUO like wildfire a few weeks back, so I’m keen to give it a go as it was always sold out when I went to buy it!  It says its made of natural Rotorua mud with aloe vera and jojoba oil, so sounds promising right?
Pureology Strength Cure – serum for dry and split ends.  My daughter has “appropriated” this so will report back on her behalf later!
Oasis BB creams – I LOVE these – I got some in my MUO Meetup goodie bag last time, and they make a fabulous primer.  We got three of them this time round and I adore the names; The Bardot (light-warm skin tones); the Monroe (light-medium skin tones) and the Hepburn (medium-dark warm skin tones.)
Palmers Moisture Rich night cream – with retinol, peptide complex, shea butter and aloe.  Tried and true and smells great.
nude by nature, pressed mineral cover –  this is a powder foundation that you can use dry or dampened.  I tried this and my skin looked FABULOUS!  I am HIGHLY likely to purchase a full-size version of this one.

Schwarzkopf essence Ultime Omega Repair shampoo & conditioner for damaged and depleted hair – Claudia Schiffer evidently helped out with this – I wonder how she knew I had dry hair?  Anyway, they are decent-sized samples (50ml) so I am looking forward to getting several washes out of them and being able to toss my glossy mane around like a show pony before long!

MUOBB_DermalogicaDermalogica “kit” – containing a precleanse and an antioxidant hydramist.  Now I am VERY naughty and I do tend to remove my makeup using a Pam’s wipe (!) which I know is very budget, but … it works for me!  However, I used the precleanse oil last night and it really loosened my makeup, so when I used the wipe to take it off, my skin felt a lot cleaner. I plan to use the  little “hydramist” in my makeup kit for special occasions so I can “freshen” my makeup if I need to. We also got a $20 off voucher which is bloody good ‘cos Dermalogica is not cheap! The little plastic pouch thing these two products came in is also going to improve my “red lipstick survival kit” no end!

Skincare products:

MUOBB_WeledaWeleda Skin Food – for rough and dry skins – full size (RRP $22.90.)  Any mums out there will know the Weleda brand; it’s something you inevitably get introduced to when you have a newborn.  From my experience, their products are all excellent, and I’m picking this one’s no different.  Here’s to fixing those horrible dry heels and elbows … I’ll keep you updated!

MUOBB_SkinfoodSkinfood light moisturiser – full size (RRP $13.99.)  This includes peach oil, manuka honey, avocado, elderberry and marshmallow extracts.  The Skinfood range SWEPT through the MUO Facebook group, so I’m very keen to give it a go.  I currently use Nivea, which I love, so I’m not really a high-end moisturiser consumer you could say – this should suit me well methinks!

MUOBB_GarnierGarnier Moisture Match – ultra-hydrating rich cream – full size (RRP $9.99.)  Another moisturiser – my skin is going to lurve me!  I have tried this already and it’s lovely on my dryish skin.

MUOBB_ManukaDocManuka Doctor apirefine – flawless perfection for high definition – full size (RRP $37.95.)  I’ve heard lots of good things about this product so I’m dying to try it and report back with my results.  It contains purified bee venom and promises a flawless looking complexion, and I, for one, am all in for that!

MUOBB_BodyShopThe Body Shop All-in-One 5-action perfecter – full size (RRP of closest primer on current site $31.50.)  At my age, primers are a godsend, so I’m expecting good things – something The Body Shop products generally deliver.

Tanning products:
In this little lineup we got:
Le Tan Wash Off Bronze – 40g – this is a foam product and it gives a lovely natural colour in my experience.  And if you just happen to have stuffed it up … never fear, because we also got the:
Bronze Buffer self-tan remover – (RRP $15.95) which is a fabulous little star-shaped sponge that you dampen and it miraculously removes those orange knees, ankles and stripes where you didn’t take quiiiite enough time with the application process.

These were one of the highlights for me especially because I LOVE a good red lipstick!  And … I got a good red lipstick (thanks Kirsty!)  So here we go:

MUOBB_karen murrellkaren murrell lipstick in shade 20: True Love – just gorgeous. RRP $30.00.

MUOBB_Caramel kissCovergirl Colourlicious in shade Caramel Kiss – this is a full-size product (RRP approx $12) and I’ve already worn it three days in a row!

MUOBB_ColourdramaMaybelline Colordrama in shade 140 Minimalist – another full-sizer (RRP $11.99.) This is a pretty pinky/nude shade and I love it.  These chubby pencils have received a lot of good press lately and I’m not surprised; they’re great.  I just wish they came with their own sharpener, ‘cos sometimes it’s hard to find one big enough.  But hey … I know someone, who instead of sharpening hers, just buys another!

MUOBB_LushJason & The Argan Oil – full size (RRP $15.90) – no self-respecting MUO Beauty Box would be without a LUSH product right, and this one certainly delivers!  It’s a solid shampoo that smells like rose jam – well, that’s what they say anyway. I don’t know if I would have picked rose jam, but it most definitely smells fabulous.  We also got a free online shipping voucher too.  Thanks LUSH!

Eye pencils, mascaras and shadows:
MUOBB_MascaraShiseido Moisture Mist Impressive Lash mascara in shade black – full-size (RRP $30.)  I’ve used this already and it really makes my LiLash’d lashes pop!  There’s no clumping and it defines them right to the very edges.  The box says it will thicken, lengthen and separate.  It’s also waterproof, but I found the Dermalogica precleanse above removed it beautifully.  Most impressed.
MUOBB_EssenceEssence 3D eyeshadow in shade 03 irresistible choco cupcake – full size (RRP $6.30) – the name alone sold me.  There’s a gorgeous shimmery nude which is beautiful to highlight the brow, and a lovely almost chestnust/coffee colour which is great to define the crease.

MUOBB_EA cream shadowElizabeth Arden cream eyeshadow in shade 01 Sand Dollar – full-size (RRP $45).  This stuff feels AMAZING and imparts a gorgeous, warm bronzey/goldy sheen. Love it.

MUOBB_EApencilElizabeth Arden Beautiful Colour precision glide eyeliner in shade 01 Black Velvet – full size (RRP $47.)  Gorgeous black that you can easily smoke out.  Fab!

Miscellaneous fabulous items

MUOBB_brushnude by nature foundation & buffing brush – I think this might be a promo one as I couldn’t find an RRP, but a similar-sized one without the double end is $19.95 on the Farmers website.) Gorgeous, full-size and soft as a baby’s bottom!  Love this brush.

MUOBB_WipesMakeup.co.nz makeup removal wipes – purrrrfect for travel or weekends away!

Essie nail lacquer in shade Dressed to Kilt –  full size (RRP $22.99.)  Get on my toes – I do love me some red toenails!

So that’s it … finally!  What do you think?  The first lot of Beauty Boxes sold out in minutes – do you think you’d be keen to get in line for subsequent Beauty Boxes if Kirsty decides to go ahead with them?  I know I’m definitely keen, but I also know there’s A LOT of work involved for Kirsty, so fingers crossed she has the energy to do them again huh!  This time round Kirsty was generous enough to include some items from her “prize cupboard” which I haven’t included here as everyone got slightly different things.  Unfortunately this resulted in a few girls complaining about other girls getting different products to them – such a shame really because from my calculations of the core products that went into each Beauty Box, there was $327 worth of product in there, not counting ANY of the samples, nor the “prize cupboard” stuff. Hmmm … great deal much?!

At this juncture I’d just like to say a very big THANK YOU to all the brands who got involved in the MUO Beauty Box.  If you like what you got ladies, go out and buy it!

Love and ridiculous amounts of gorgeous beauty products …

PS: the sharp-eyed amongst you may have noticed there are a couple of products in the “group” photo that were not mentioned.  These were admin gifts so were not received by everyone. Adminning a 33,000-strong group requires a dedicated team and this is one of the ways Kirsty rewards us.

MumptyLoves 01/06/2015

These are the things Mumpty loves this week – 01/06/2015

HeartsOh yes, I’m mixing it up on my little blog this week!  Instead of publishing MumptyLoves on a Friday like I normally do, I’m doing MumptyLoves Monday!!!  Kinda sounds better right?!
Anyway, enough of that … let’s go with the things I love:

♥ Lilash eyelash serum

LilashMy clever partner got me this for Christmas and I LOVE it … my eyelashes have grown SO MUCH.  I find this product excellent – I didn’t get sore eyes, there’s no issue with my eyelashes growing on funny angles or any other silly stories I’ve read.  I just think everyone should have some!

♥  I’m getting a Beauty Box from Makeup Obsessives!

MUO Beauty Box

Squeeeee!  I am VERY excited about this.  Kirsty, the founder of Makeup Obsessives, has come up with a fabulous opportunity for MUO members to get a Beauty Box, packed full of fabulous hair, skin, makeup and nail products.  Soooo exciting … I most certainly do feel a review coming on when I receive it!

♥ Simple eye makeup remover

Simple eye makeup remover

I LOVE this stuff.  It works REALLY well, it’s gentle, i.e. it doesn’t bother my eyes AT ALL, and best of all … it’s not in the least bit oily, so there’s no blurry eyes for the rest of the evening like I got with other eye makeup removers I’ve tried.  I am SO impressed by this product.  And guess what … I got it from the supermarket for $9.99.  Ooooh I love a bargain like that!

♥ My newest invention: a zip puller-upper!

Mumpty’s patent-pending zip puller-upper!

I get dressed after everyone else in the house has left and I have several dresses that I just cannot do all the way up to the top without help (I’m looking at YOU, Heidi dress by Pinup Girl Clothing!)  Anyway .. rather than get someone at work to perform the deed (which weirdly, feels slightly too “intimate” for my liking) I devised a cunning plan. Well, a cunning gadget actually! Whilst it may well look ridiculous (!) it works a treat, and with very limited contortions, I can now get my zips done up without help!  It really is amazing what you can do with a weird metal thing out of your heated rollers and some wool now isn’t it!  I’m thinking long-term I am going to have to replace the wool, but meh – small sacrifice!

♥ Fizzy water

Fizzy water

We fizz our water in the Soda Stream – it’s the only way I can convince myself to have a decent water intake.  Making it fizzy just somehow makes it better don’t ya think?!

♥ Floradix  …

FloradixMy Mum bought me this because she is a good little mummy and she cares enough to buy her 46-year-old-daughter stuff like this!  It’s got everything that’s good for you under the sun, and I must say, it has put a spring back in my step!  Honestly though, I do feel much better and I highly recommend this stuff if you’re feeling like you need a bit of a pick-me-up.

♥ Christian Louboutin Love Me 120
patent leather pumps …

I don’t know that there are even words to describe quite how much I love and want these!!

And here they are in nude, because why not?

CL Love Me Nude

What are your favourite things this week?  By the way, if you enjoyed this version of MumptyLoves, there are more editions here.

Enjoy and have a glorious long weekend if you’re in NZ …
